ETTERBEEK SWEEPS SCHOFIELD COMPASS DRAW

Army chaplain Jonathan Etterbeek pulled off a sweep of all three Schofield Compass Draw tournaments by capturing singles, doubles and mixed doubles on March 15. Etterbeek, a former West Point tennis team player and All Army captain, breezed through the men's doubles by teaming with Scott Christiansen to vanquish Ryan Moses and Sosefu Veatama in the finals, 6-2, 6-2. The chaplain also had to work a bit, but managed to get by pesky Colonel James Lin in the singles final 6-3, 6-2.

The most competitive and the most interesting final of the day occurred in mixed doubles where Etterbeek teamed with daughter Tatiana Etterbeek to play Carol Dunn and Lional Barona. Barona and Dunn took the first set 7-5 by playing smart tactical tennis. However, the Etterbeeks assumed a unorthodox style in the last two sets as Jonathan started running all over the court to hit as many balls as possible. Tatiana complemented her father by keeping whatever balls in play were hit to her. The Etterbeeks took the second set 6-4 and then came from behind in the third set to knock off Dunn and Barona 7-5 for the championship bowl.
