Pacific Tennis Foundation Official Linesperson's Training Qualifies
Twenty Local Enthusiasts for WTA
On the weekend of July 7 and 8, the Hawaii Pacific Tennis Foundation
conducted a Professional Linesperson Training at Schofield Tennis Center
in Wahiawa. Over 24 people attended, with 20 qualifying to work as
linespersons at the upcoming $140,000 WTA event at the Hilton Waikoloa on
the Big Island in September.
With District and Foundation direct contact with key national volunteers and
staff, the USTA national office sent trainer John Wong from the mainland
to conduct the training. Wong was amazed at the numbers which our local
efforts produced, especially given sparse results produced in the past by
other Hawaii tennis groups. Wong had hoped to qualify between 6 and 9
linespersons for the WTA tournament. However, by the end of the session,
he could not choose among a top crew of 18! According to Wong, we produced
not only quantity but quality!
Up until this training, only 2 people in Hawaii were qualified as
linespersons for professional events. With these results, Hawaii is much
better positioned to support professional tennis with the coming of the
Waiola Tennis Complex next year.
By qualifying, nine of the 20 will receive airfare and housing on the Big
Island while they work the WTA qualifying tournament on September 8 and
9. Additionally, five of those nine will continue to work the main
draw with pay.
Those completing the intensive training session are:
