ALEX SMITH AND MYRAH KIM SELECTED AS OFFICIALS TO WORK
INDIAN WELLS PRO TOURNAMENT
Foundation Treasurer Alex Smith and Foundation supporter Myrah Kim leapfrogged
over a waiting list of mainland officials to garner and accept invitations
to the presitigious Newsweek professional ATP and WTA event in Indian
Wells, California. The invite is prestigious and rare, considering that
both Kim and Smith have worked only three professional tournaments in
their respective officiating careers.
Only 1 1/2 years ago, Myrah and Alex attended the officials training
sponsored by the Hawaii-Pacific Tennis Foundation. Each impressed trainer
John Wong and were invited to work the Big Island WTA and Challenger events.
With their respective performances at the recently concluded Challenger
event, Indian Wells' officials' supervisor Joan Vornbaum invited both
Alex and Myrah, taking them over a waiting list of other officials.
Both Kim and Smith are excited and nervous at the opportunity to work
a major professional event. Given their training, Hawaii's tennis community
is proud and confident that they will represent us well.
Who knows? Perhaps the next step is the US Open!
