Dr. Gavin Hopper, an ATP and WTA internationally renown coach will join
USPTA President and national Coach of the Year David Porter as featured
speakers at the Hawaii-Pacific Tennis Foundation's Annual Meeting and
Awards Banquet at the Okinawan Center in Waipio Gentry on Thursday, December
11 from 6 to 9 pm. Hopper, a professor in sports science at Australia's
Bond University will talk about "Life on the Pro Tour". Dr.
Hopper has coached over a decade on the ATP and WTA Tours and has coached
such notables as Pat Cash, Monica Seles, Mark Philippousis, Wally Masur,
Amanda Coetzer, Malivia Washington, Iva Majoli, Tommy Haas and others.
Hopper's presentation will feature examples of excellence and humor.
Dr. David Porter, USPTA national president and Men's and Women's coach
of the perennial national champion BYU-Hawaii tennis teams will speak
on "the Qualities of a Champion". Porter, always an informative
and entertaining speaker, will discuss what it takes to succeed not only
in the tennis world, but in life generally.
Hopper will conduct a High Performance Junior Clinic on Friday, December
12 from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. The group is limited to a maximum of 8 players
and will feature world class drills and training how the world's top professionals
train. Hopper's experience as a coach of world champions will help show
clinic participants the tools for success and achievement. The clinic
will conclude at 7:30 pm with an exhibition featuring Jade Hopper, one
of the best 12 and under girls in the world. Jade is the youngest athlete
to ever sign an endorsement contract with Fila. Ranked #1 in Australia
12 and Under for 2002 and 2003, Jade is considered by many as the best
12 and under girl in the world. She has represented Australia individually
and in international team events since the age of 10. She has tournament
wins worldwide and has played international exhibitions since 7 years
old, including sessions with Monica Seles and Anna Kournikova. Jade is
also the youngest ever recipient of the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport)
Scholarship.
The exhibition and junior clinic will also feature 11 year old Ben Mitchell.
Ben is ranked #1 in Australia in the 11 and under boys division and #2
in the 12 and unders. He has won international events and has represented
Australia in international team competition since age 10.
The exhibition will start at 7:30 pm on Friday, December 12 at CORP and
is free to the public.
While the Friday High Performance Junior Clinic is limited to 8 junior
players, Dr. Hopper is opening up a clinic for adults and other juniors
on Saturday, December 13 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. The session will work
on stroke production, physical training and strategy with a focus on training
how the top professionals training. All participants will eat a cookout
lunch at 12:30.
The cost for clinic participants is $50 for Foundation members and $65
for nonmembers. Tickets for the Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet are
still available at $50 for the general public and $45 for Foundation members.
Those wishing to attend the Awards Banquet and Clinic will pay only $85
