Mayor Harris Proposes $3 Million in 2003 to Complete
Tennis Complex
Mayor Harris has placed $3 million in his proposed
fiscal year 2003 budget to complete the Central Oahu Regional Park tennis
complex. While the City is close to completing the first phase of 20 courts,
which may open as soon as June, 2002, to complete the facility it needs
to build a 5,000 seat stadium along with a locker, lounge, administrative
and classroom area as well as four additional courts.
Mayor Harrisí proposal requires City Council
approval. The Mayorís budget has come under stricter scrutiny from the
Council, given the administrationís failure to follow through on
privatization of the new Waipio Point soccer facility, thus resulting in
additional municipal annual maintenance outlays exceeding $750,000. Some City
Council members have questioned the propriety of spending additional money
on Central Oahu Regional Park projects, including tennis, unless the
administration privatizes operation and maintenance functions.
The Foundation and HI-5 Sports have combined to
present Mayor Harris with a financially viable operational and maintenance
proposal for the facility. Given
this proposal, Foundation executive director Mark Beede has contacted and
met with each City Council member to urge passage of the 2003 fiscal year
budget as it relates to the tennis facility |
