FOUNDATION SUCCESSFUL BIDDER FOR CENTRAL OAHU REGIONAL
PARK TENNIS COMPLEX
At the public bid opening in Honolulu on May 7, 2003, Hawaii-Pacific
Tennis Foundation obtained the bid to operate and manage the tennis complex
at Central Oahu Regional Park. The successful bid represents a major step
toward furthering the Foundation's mission to promote and develop the
growth of tennis in Hawaii. The next step in the process consists of the
City of Honolulu and the Foundation executing a contract for the actual
management and operation.
"I am excited about the prospects which operating the complex presents
for the growth of tennis in Hawaii, and specifically on Oahu" says Mark
Beede, Hawaii-Pacific Tennis Foundation executive director. "I commend
my Foundation's board for having the foresight and courage to step forward
to take on this project, which can only benefit our community. They are
truly operating from a sense of community improvement. Furthermore, we
intend to involve the entire tennis community in realizing the tremendous
potential which the complex has for local tennis, youth development as
well as enhancing sports tourism on Oahu through special events and tournaments."
Additionally, executing a contract with the Foundation may pave the way
for the City and County of Honolulu to commence the facility's second
phase, which could include an administrative clubhouse, a 5,000 seat stadium
and additional training courts. In last year's budget, the City approved
3.1 million dollars to finish the facility with a proviso that the City
execute a contract with a private entity to assume the full costs of facility
operation. The upcoming contract may well satisfy that condition, which
will allow the project to move forward.
Obviously, this could not have happened without the support of the Foundation's
members. The Foundation appreciates the past support and looks forward
to working with everyone in the future to realize the full potential which
this world class facility presents.
